Why hire a contractor: Part 1

Safety first.

Safety doesn't just come from working safely with power tools, or knowing what

the GHS labels mean (Globally Harmonized System for classifying dangerous chemicals and solvents). Working safely comes with knowing what you're working with and what you're working on.

Ask yourself:

Do you know what asbestos looks like?

Do you know if that wall is load bearing?

Do you know the code requirements for a basement egress window or handrail?

There are a lot of safety and code requirements that go into any project. If these requirements are not met, your family could be at risk of injury.

Above Board.

Licensed contractors are bound by the OBC (Ontario Building Code) and will make sure you and your family are living safely in your new space.

Another risk of not complying to safety and code requirements is loss on your investment. For instance, if your new DIY basement or bathroom renovation doesn't meet minimum code or safety requirements, it will become a liability when it is time to sell.

What if something goes wrong?

Quality contractors will have liability and property damage insurance. For residential renovations the insured amount is typically $2,000,000. If you accidentally flood your kitchen while DIY renovating your upstairs bathroom, you will be on the hook to cover those costs. Hiring a Contractor will keep you covered in case of an accident resulting in damage to your home or property.

...stay tuned for Part 2!
